Vintage Look- Baby Blue 50's Sheath Dress and Ms Jessie's hat

This late 1950's/early 1960's sheath dress was one of my Easter dresses years ago. I found it cheap and much too large, and shamelessly cut it down to my size. The color looks like spring to me, and I loved the all-over embroidery.
It's appropriate that I am standing in front of my clematis named, "The President", because I feel slightly Jackie O in this outfit. Cool, calm, perfectly mannered and unflappable. But we all know that all you'd have to do is show me a cute toad, or a piece of chocolate, and all composure would be out the window ;)
My purse is made of raffia with wooden handles and paper flowers. I've had it since my high school days. The hat is one of many that I got from a dear elder lady in our church, Ms. Jessie Test.
When I was very small, five or so, she would come up to me after church and unsnap her tiny black coin purse. And she would say, "You were very good in church today," and press a penny into my hand. I knew the penny was very special because she gave it to me with such solemnity . And I remember thinking what a tiny lady she was. Even when I was five!
I can remember moma and I picking blackberries and taking them to Ms Jessie, and sitting with her on her porch swing. And I remember when she took down the Beaver Brand hat box from her closet, filled with hats for me. She passed soon after that, but I remember her fondly. She was such a kind, dear lady, and I want to be like that.
Here is a closeup so you can see the sweet bow detail on the sleeves and also the lovely embroidery that swirls over the fabric. Plus a whole lot of arm freckles/moles- ha!
And here are my shoes. They are Betty Page shoes, and they are now one of my very FAVORITE pairs! I ordered a pair of Betty Paige Sally Pumps in black HERE, because I was desperately needing to replace my seven year old pair of heels that were peeling and cracking. The company's workmanship and comfort impressed me so much that I bought these to go with my scads of blue dresses. I'm so glad I did!
I'm a size 10, but usually always buy an 11 on-line because of size fluctuation. But I  had to return them. Betty Page shoes actually come true to size! And they are so comfortable. The heel is just the right height to give you a nice lift, yet be steady and comfortable to walk in. Look at the soles. There are two leather pads, heel and toe, that are filled with  cushioning. And then look at the adorable blue ruffling that lines the sides, just for stinkin' cuteness! I really love these shoes, as well as my black pair. (They also have a shoe in emerald green in a style like Barbara Stanwyck wore in Christmas in Connecticut that I am trying to put from my mind ;) If you are looking for a gorgeous shoe in a vintage style that is actually wearable- you can find these Betty Page Lucy Spectator Pumps HERE on Amazon. I'll show you my black heels in another post!
And one last look at my dear hat. I have several more from Ms. Jessie that I love to wear. I also have a little black coin purse much like hers. I wonder what a child would do nowadays if I pressed a penny into their hand?

  1. Oh dear! Baby blue is my ultimate favorite color! Sigh! This dress would be so beautiful at , say, a wedding!😉😉 I LOVE the stories! I LOVE old people! It's like having grandparents all over the place. And when they take a special interest in you, well, it makes a heart just swell! I had a similar little gentleman who was in a wheelchair, so he was right eye level with me. He had stunning blue eyes and would always ask if he could trade me for my brown ones. At the time my youngest sister was just a few yrs old, but had blue eyes. Everyone made the biggest deal over her eyes and I was secretly jealous....but God knew, and I think he sent that sweet man to nourish my little soul. I sure hope I'm like that someday when I grow up!😘

    1. Oh, that is so sweet! One of the best things about taking interest and loving older folks is that they have so much to share, and they make us realize the kind of people we want to grow into!

  2. Maybe a nickel? I would do it.

When Joel was little there was a couple in our church like this. And every time he went to visit his grandparents she would empty her change purse out so he would have spending money. He learned very young that if he would tell them he was going to grandma's he would get a pocketful of change!

Another sweet thing about this couple...when Joel was 5 & chose to pray & accept Christ in his heart...they were the first people he wanted to tell. As soon as he prayed he pleaded with us to take him to their house so he could tell them. Of course we did & it made their day almost as much as mine.

Love the dress. Trying not to have vintage dress/skinny girl envy.

    1. That is such a great story! There really are "grandmas and grandpas" everywhere for us, if we just look. Joel was always such a sweetheart :). But don't you dare say you are envious! You are one of my earliest supporters as a young mom, homeschooler, and blogger. You are GORGEOUS to me and anyone who knows you, just the way you are. We just need to get you into some vintage...;)
