Monday's Mary Oliver- Aunt Leaf
I hope you don't mind, Dear Reader, but I am going to start republishing some of my favorite Mary Oliver poems. I know you may have seen them before, but can you really see beautiful poetry too often? I happen to think not, and so many of her works delight me. I have been missing my old days when I shared a poem each week. I hope you will enjoy these again along with me...
Aunt Leaf
by Mary Oliver
Needing one, I invented her -
the great-great-aunt dark as hickory
called Shining-Leaf, or Drifting-Cloud
or The-Beauty-of-the-Night.
Dear aunt, I'd call into the leaves,
and she'd rise up, like an old log in a pool,
and whisper in a language only the two of us knew
the word that meant follow,
and we'd travel
cheerful as birds
out of the dusty town and into the trees
where she would change us both into something quicker -
two foxes with black feet,
two snakes green as ribbons,
two shimmering fish - and all day we'd travel.
At day's end she'd leave me back at my own door
with the rest of my family,
who were kind, but solid as wood
and rarely wandered. While she,
old twist of feathers and birch bark,
would walk in circles wide as rain and then
float back
scattering the rags of twilight
on fluttering moth wings;
or she'd slouch from the barn like a gray opossum;
or she'd hang in the milky moonlight
burning like a medallion,
this bone dream, this friend I had to have,
this old woman made out of leaves.
Oh I love the poem. And that beautiful picture. That is what morning looked here today. Fall is my favorite time of the year and beautiful misty cool mornings just speak to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love the poem also, and I adore foggy mornings. This photo is from the field behind the house. I am very ready for fall!
ReplyDeleteOh how beautiful.... Thank you so much, for sharing....
ReplyDeleteAnd I too love foggy... Fogging anytime! And I like to call it 'Dragon's Breath'! -smile-
I came here, because I saw a blogging friend of yours say, that you wear vintage clothing. How delightful. I love to wear long-ish cotton (corduroy in winter) dresses. Not really vintage, but..... Still feminine.
And I have found your lovely blog. Will keep it in my Blog Places, to return.

I'm pleased to make your acquaintance, and thank you for your kind words! I too love corduroy dresses, especially the ones with buttons all down the front. I'm so happy you have decided you will return to visit with me. I do hope that you will read one of my older posts that is simply titled, "Fog". It has some of my favorite pictures of the farm in the fog, and well as plenty of ramblings on ;)
DeleteFollowed a Mary Oliver search and found you. I’ll be around.
ReplyDeleteHey there nice lady. Just popping in to say Hi & miss you~
