Vintage Look- 1940's Green plaid ruffle dress

I love this handmade 1940's housedress. It looks like a wrap dress, but you simply pull it on over your head and belt it. The asymmetrical buttons and neckline are a unique touch.
The frilled cap sleeves are echoed in the skirt ruffle. Around the sleeves and pocket is white rickrack.
My son, Seth got me a 50 cent snake at the Dollar General, just because he knew I would like it. It was immediately my "porch snake". Here I am pointing out the terrible danger to our 19 year old cat, Mousie.
She was not amused in the least, but she still gave me lots of kitty kisses.
I do believe I mentioned the pocket! ;)
The shoes I wore with it are SO comfortable. I have white patent heels, but I really needed some white shoes to wear to work. Do you know how hard it is to find white shoes?? These have a small platform wedge, just enough to feel a bit fancier than plain flats. Can you see how padded and plush these shoes are inside? Super squishy, so I can wear them all day. I usually wear a 10, but an 11 fits me perfectly in this brand. I like that they look just like some  my Grandma Betty used to wear :). I found these on Amazon here- Dream Pairs Wedge Shoes
I also carried my 1940's Whiting and Davis metal mesh purse that I've shown you before. Each one of those circles is an enamel-coated metal link that connects to all the others like chainmail. Mine is nearly perfect, inside and out. Whiting and Davis began making metal mesh purses in 1892 and still make some today. I also have one of theirs from the 1920's that was enameled with a floral design. So fun!
I mentioned my dress was handmade, and I mean that in the truest sense, a lot of it was sewn by hand and not on a machine. Just look at these stitches! They make me laugh, because that is what it would look like if I did it.
Such a lot of work and the dress looks brand-new. Perhaps they didn't like it once they were through? That's happened to me when sewing. Or maybe they saved it because it was one of the first dresses they ever made. Whatever the reason, I love it and will wear it most happily!

  2. Ah, dear Sam, you never cease to amaze me with your stunning taste! I am so jealous that you are able to find so many vintage dresses! I love the shoes too! And the purse, I have one of my grandmothers, from the 20s. She paid 10$ for it and saved her own money to purchase. Its flat, but does have the flowers. ..
..not commenting on snake, except to say, glad it's only fake!😂

    1. Thanks, sugar! I am constantly amazed to find dresses that are so cute, but cheaply priced simply because they are handmade and a little quirky. Quirky suits me fine! ;) OH, I'd love to see her purse, and I love things that have stories. So glad you have it!

    1. Thank you so much! And thank for complimenting the shoes. My husband looked at them and laughed and said, "Those are some hideous shoes!" I protested that they looked like my grandma's and he smirked as if to say- enough said ;)

  4. Oh, I love that dress. You have a cute cat. I'm not a cat person, though, and I'm actually allergic to them. I prefer doggies

    1. Thank you! Her call her Grandma Kitty because she is so old. We have never purposely gone out to get a cat, they have always come to use through need. This cat, Mousie, was dumped down the road in a plastic sack with two siblings. I am proud that she has had such a good, long life with us! But I also love dogs. And possums. And my snail, and my baby turtle, and....;)
