Roaring in the the 20's

It's officially 2020! I had wanted so much to do a "Roaring 20's" party for this New Year, but the more I thought about it I realized that it would put pressure on the girls to buy special dresses for the occasion. With the holidays, a new baby coming, and a house being built, I didn't want anyone to feel like they needed to spend any extra money. However, I found this crazy gorgeous dress at Goodwill 9 months ago and I was not going to let the opportunity pass to dress a little bit flapper!

Ever since I can remember, the tradition has been to have a fondue dinner  and then play games till midnight. And that is what we still do, despite having grown from just moma, pop, and I. Now we have three oil pots down the table and two cheese pots! It's a bit of work, but so fun. And very special since it only comes once a year! We do chicken, fresh crappie, and shrimp. Also, broccoli, cauliflower, and mushrooms with all kinds of condiments. You can see by the picture there was some serious eating going on. At one point my mother-in-law said, "Boy, it's quiet in here!" We all laughed because that is NOT normally the case. But all our mouths were full :). Then we took pictures in front of a backdrop and got hungry again. So we had chocolate fondue with strawberries, fresh pineapple, Mandarin oranges, pretzels, cherries, and marshmallows. Talk about stuffed!
Here is my middle son, Seth, and his wife, Emiley.
My oldest, Devin, and his wife, Savannah.
My youngest, Will, and his wife Belle. He's patting the baby!
Hubby, Duane, and his moma, Mary.
 My three beautiful daughters!!
And this is Belle and Vincent William Doss. If you were squinting trying to see him, he'll be in her tummy till May ;)
And here is my whole clan, my beloved ones, my world. Moma and Pop didn't want an individual picture, but they are in this one. Everyone is sort of smiling and has their eyes open- a New Year's miracle!
I made this backdrop against the bookcases with the thought of it looking like one of the vintage photos of the people sitting on the moon. But I couldn't figure out how to put the moon that low without nails, and pop would have had a heartattack to see the gorgeous bookcases with nails in them! I got the moon cut out about 11:30 the night before, and took it outside to the driveway to spray it. That night we were having a violent wind storm and it kept trying to rip it from my hands. Then, the can of spray glitter that I paid almost $8 for ran out of glitter before I had even done half of it. I went inside and got my spray glue and a tube of real glitter. My hands were numb by then, and when I grabbed the tube to pour a little into my palm to sprinkle it, I dumped the entire vial on the ground instead. So then I was pinching up fingerfuls out of the gravel and flinging it- dirt and all- at the silly thing. Most of it simple blew back on me. So I gave up on a beautiful, gleaming moon and brought it down to the house. When I finished the backdrop, I stood back and looked. It was a terrible rendition of a vintage moon photo. But it was a spot-on job of replicating a tacky 80's Prom backdrop. Hey, you take what you can get!
I don't ever get in pictures because I am the one taking them, or I am running in and out of the kitchen. So Duane and I took these pictures earlier. And that way we were also in comfy clothes for the rest of the night!
I may have been the only one dressed for the 20's, but I loved the photos, and our night together. We played games until we were snorting and hysterical (okay, maybe that was just me), and then we gathered with our glasses of sparkling white grape juice to watch the ball drop and to cheer in a New Year.

I hope, Dear Reader, that whether or not you stayed up till midnight, you enjoyed your Eve, and you are excited for all the shining possibilities of the New Year. Wishing you a blessed 2020. Just imagine all the wonderful things that are bound to happen!

  1. What a wonderful night, Ms Sam! Your dress is gorgeous and you look positively stunning :) I think Savannah looks very vintage as well.

Your moon backdrop is wonderful! I can definitely see the glitter on it! I'm sorry you had such a rough time with it!

    1. Thank you, Ms Jennilee! The dress was a lot of fun, but I was glad that I had decided not o wear it for supper. I found that every movement made it creep up- I was yanking it back down between every picture! I was not meant to be one of those shocking flappers ;). And Savvy looked AMAZING! She just got the dress with Christmas money and was excited to wear it. I told her I can see it in the summer at garden parties...{romantic sigh} And thank you for commiserating with me on my moon troubles , he he!

  2. You have so much fun! You dress is beautiful and I love your moon backdrop and the story behind it! We had my folks over for New Year's Eve. Chili for supper, a few games of UNO Attack, a football game on TV and we were in bed by 10:00. I do enjoy your posts and seeing all your fun get to togethers. Maybe one of these days I will be inspired to do more than soup and crackers!

    1. Thank you, sugar! I sure don't think you have to do anything over the top to have a good time! The whole point is being with those we love, and I know your folks were delighted to be with you for the evening :). I love Uno, but have never tried that one. And I could personally eat soup and bread every night of winter- so cozy and wonderful! Thank you for visiting with me :)

  3. What fun! I wondered if you would do a roaring 20's party. I guess you have a whole year to plan one if you still want to. Your dress is gorgeous.

It has been years since we've stayed up to midnight. 4AM starts for workdays make staying up late on holidays pretty much impossible. Plus Charlie worked the whole week & our kids went back to work on New Year's Day. So we slept through all the fireworks no problem.

I'm very happy for you that you still get to do family traditions.....with your family!...from your childhood. That is so rare, especially with sons after they marry. We don't do any of our traditions anymore since our son got married so I always feel a little off balance trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing. I think I prefer ordinary days to holidays as I get older.

    1. I thought that a 20's party would be so fun, and I even have my great Aunt Add's Victrola that could supply period music. Maybe I will do like you say, and just have one later...A garden party would be amazing! I could bring the Victrola outside...oh my, you have the little gerbils spinning the wheel in my head, he he!

I know I am blessed that I have kids who still treasure ritual and tradition even though they are grown. It makes me very sad to hear you no longer do anything of those things anymore! But perhaps the trade-off is that you get to be such a huge part of your grandbaby's life. I know there is nothing in the world you'd trade for that joy!

  4. I can't believe you ever feared showing your pix in vintage- very becoming! The twenties suit you! I am rather short for the dropped waists but have a dress just the same 😉 You have seen "Enchanted April" right? Sorry, I haven't been around all that long so maybe you've shared such.

    1. Thank you, sweet lady! I actually still have trouble putting my pictures up, even when I like them. And I have almost decided not to share my Vintage Look posts on Facebook anymore. I don't want people to identify with me as "the person who takes pictures in vintage clothes." I hope that you all read my other posts and know more about who I really am. I struggle with that, even as I want to share the clothing with others...

I have not seen that movie, but I have the book, "The Enchanted April" by Elizabeth Von Arnim. Is the movie from it, because that is a FAVORITE book! And I am so delighted that you came here to visit, so I could find your blog. I love it! If I was smart enough I would do one of those things where you list the blog you like down the side, so other folks could find you. Maybe I will get there someday!

  5. I really loved reading your blog. It was very well authored and easy to understand. Unlike additional blogs I have read which are really not that good. I also found your posts very interesting. In fact after reading, I had to go show it to my friend and he enjoyed it as well!
