Vintage Look- Gown Town Hydrangea Blue dress
I'm kind of excited about this Vintage Look post, because I have a lot of people say, "I love your dress; it's too bad it's one of a kind." That's one of the beauties of vintage clothing, you are not going to show up anywhere and have someone wearing the same outfit as you. And, honey, if you do, then you just found a soulmate! But this dress is not true vintage, it is one of the few that I have bought from a store (and no, not Goodwill!). I got it off Amazon, which I suppose is a store? Anyhoo, two years ago, when Seth and Emily married, her colors were yellow and the blue of hydrangeas. If you know me, you know I wear a lot of blue. But I didn't have anything that was the right color, yet nice enough for a church wedding and casual enough for an outdoor reception. Then I found this dress and knew it was perfect!
I bought it from a company called Gown Town. I ordered a medium, which was exactly within my measurements. When it came, it fit every curve perfectly. So I sent it back for a large. Yep, I am not the kind who wants my booty cupped and my hips gripped. It was free to return it, and the second dress came as quickly as the first. When I tried it on, I was so happy. It was the exact color of the flowers, it was long enough, and it didn't fit too closely. In the upper picture I am bending over like this to show you that the fabric has a lovely stretchy-ness to it. Yes, I know that a lady is only supposed to bend at the knees, not the hips, but this is to show you how easy it is to move in. This is seriously a dress that you could crouch down to pick up a toddler, and it would still feel comfortable and look flattering.
This photo is also important. Have you ever gotten a dress you love, and then sat down and it was just a mess? It rode up, or the tummy fabric puffed out like a bullfrog, or it just looked like a wadded up sack if you weren't standing. This dress is flattering however you move. The fabric is amazing. I've seen some reviews that say it is too thick, or "weird". I love the weight of it. There is no need for a slip, it smooths nicely over curves without clinging, and it is of a weight that will not stretch or dry misshapen when it's washed. The picture below is from the wedding, standing with my Dear Friend. Do you see how the dress hits below my knees?! That is a beautiful thing to find when you are a tall girl looking at modern clothing.
Now here's the bad part. I just looked and this exact dress is not in stock right now. I'm so sorry! But I glanced through others by Gown Town and there are so many adorable ones! Yes, there are some that look more costume-y and like they are made for a retro party instead of real life. But I found some that I would definitely wear. And now you are looking at me skeptically, thinking, "They probably cost too much." Seriously, sugar, I thought you knew me better than that! I am the thrift shop queen. I can stretch a dollar till it snaps back and kills someone ;). These dresses cost around $32-$39, free shipping, free returns. No lie, folks. I admit that I have only bought this one dress, but I would not hesitate to try them again after such a good experience. In fact, when I found out I couldn't give you a link to my dress, I made the mistake of looking at their other dresses. I found a bunch of super cute ones, and I should not have tempted myself like that. Maybe you'll indulge me to show you a few. The links are in tan...
How about this cutie?
You know I have a weakness for gingham
And this one
The asymmetrical collar is so 40's
and this one...
This makes me think of Audrey Hepburn
And last bit not least
And this one of Marilyn Monroe
I guess this post is to show that it is possible to find cute vintage-inspired clothing at a decent price. If you do purchase from them, or any other online vendor, please look at every measurement chart they offer! The Gown Town one has a chart under the spot where you can order that tells bust and waist measurements. But at the left side with the other photos it has one that also says the length. The length of the skirt is very important for me, and the dresses differ. So, if you are one of those ladies who has been wanting to dip a toe in the vintage dressing waters, perhaps one of the Gown Town dresses might be just the ticket. Would you wear any of these dresses? If not, then keep your eyes peeled for things to try at the local Goodwill, Dear Reader. You might just see me there ;)

My sweetheart has been encouraging me to try ordering a dress online because I've moaned so about finding something I love. So I may try this! I love the gingham & the asymmetrical collar. I also love full skirts. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAnd your sweet blue dress is perfect. The color fits you perfectly & I love the style.
Thank you, Ms Jenny! I am not usually a fan of modern made to look vintage, but my experience was good. I hope that is you decide to try them, it is just as great for you. Make sure of the measurements, and also check to be sure of returns. I know some spots only offer returns on some items. Good luck!
DeleteWhat an adorable dress, Ms Sam! And your Dear Friend's dress is equally adorable! I have a soft spot for the 1940's, so I am enamored with that second dress you posted. Dresses are so hard for me to fit, so I tend to stay away from them.
ReplyDeleteThank you! And my friend's dress is a 60's dress that I gave her. Isn't she adorable in it?! Do you ever find cheap dresses at thrift shops and try to alter them to your liking? Sometimes that's the only way to get a fit that you feel is flattering. What about skirts and tops?
DeleteI wear a skirt every day :) I've not tried to alter a dress, but maybe when I have a bit more time, I will!
